The most romantic day of
the year, next to your wedding day, is Valentine Day. It is a
day in which gifts are exchanged with love and affection for
the recipient. It is also a day to acknowledge long lasting
friendships. We give cards to mothers, fathers, and friends. We
give special gifts to those within we are romantically
involved.
The symbol for Valentine Day is Cupid with his
bow and arrow. You will it on many cards. Cupid was the son of
Venus. Venus was jealous of the beauty of a mortal, Prospera,
and sent Cupid to kill her. Instead, he fell in love with her
and took her as his wife on the condition that she never looked
at him. It was forbidden that a mortal look at a god. When her
sisters persuaded her to look at him, he left her. She found
herself in a field. Their home was gone. She wandered around
looking for Cupid and happened on the temple of Venus. Venus
gave her a series of tasks to perform. The hardest was to
gather the beauty of a goddess in a box and she was not to look
in the box. With temptation overcoming her, she looked in the box and fell
into a deadly slumber. Cupid found her and put the slumber
back into the box. Because of her love for Cupid, Venus
and the other gods forgave her for looking at him and made
her a goddess.
Another symbol of Valentine Day is the heart.
The heart is an important organ in the body. When it fails, we
lose our life. When we fall in love or when we extend genuine
friendship, it is from the heart. It means that person is an
important part of our life, one that we do not want to part
with.
Gift giving on Valentine Day is a tradition.
Gifts include flowers, chocolates, and jewelry. Many people get
engaged on Valentine Day and some get married. Next to
Christmas, Valentine Day is the day on which the most number of
greeting cards are sold.
When you give a gift on a Valentine Day, it
should be one that you have selected with care and
thoughtfulness for the recipient.
