Cinco de Mayo
On May 5, 1862, about
4,000 Mexicans defeated a much larger French garrison in a
battle it was thought they could not win. It is not Mexico
Independence Day. It is a day that is celebrated mostly in the
Mexican region of Puebla where the battle took place and by
Mexican Americans in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and
Texas.
There are large celebrations in these states.
Several cities in California sponsor events that feature
Mexican music, dancing, and food. Celebrations are held in
public parks, at city halls, and art museums feature art
by Mexican artists.
Since it is more of a regional celebration in
Mexico, it has become more of a celebration in the United
States where there is a large Mexican American population. As
with other holidays, merchants in the United States and Mexico
promote products and services which focus on Mexican food,
music, and dancing.
