The tradition of giving
gifts for a newborn baby could possibly have started in ancient
times. Gifts were given after the baby was born at a
christening ceremony or when the mother received visitors after
the birth of the baby. The gifts were usually handmade.
Baby showers as we know them today have become
a tradition of giving gifts before the baby is born. For many
years it has been customary to give a gift that will be
suitable for a boy or a gir. With today's technology, if
parents so desire, they can find out the gender of the baby
before it is born. They will also know if they are going to
have twins. If they do tell the gender of the baby, the gift
can be gender specific.
In years past, the baby shower was given by a
female relative or friends and the attendees were all
female. Today, male relatives and friends can be invited.
The father-to be can also attend the baby shower.
