The origin of April Fools
Day is to thought to have originated with the change of the
calendar in the Christian world by Pope Gregory in 1562. The
New Year had previously been celebrated on April 1 and the
Gregorian calendar changed it to January 1. The New Year was celebrated then
as it is now with dancing and parties. Not everyone knew
about the changes in the calendar and continued to
celebrate the New Year on April 1. These people were
called April fools and pranks were played on them.
April Fools Day, also known as All Fools Day,
is celebrated in many parts of the world. Americans play tricks
and pranks on their friends on this day. These tricks are
harmless and in good fun. Everyone enjoys the laugh, including
the person on whom the trick is played. In France it is known
as Poisson d'Avril. New fish are hatched in April and
is easily caught. French children tape a picture of a fish on
the back of their friends and when it is discovered, they yell
"Poisson d'Avril."
